Tips on Memorization of Qur’an

Tips on Memorization of Qur'an

Poem

The DISTINGUISHED Student

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (radiAllahu anhu) said:

يَنْبَغِي لحَامِلِ اَلْقُرْآنِ أَنْ يُعْرَفُ بِلَيْلِهِ إِذَا النَّاسُ نَائِمُونَ
The one who memorizes Quran must be known
by his nights when the people are sleeping,

وَ بِنِهَارِهِ إِذَا النَّاسُ مُفْطِرُونَ
by his days when the people are eating,

وَ بِحُزْنِهِ إِذَا النَّاسُ يَفْرَحُونَ
by his sadness when the people are rejoicing,

وَ بِبُكَائِهِ إِذَا النَّاسُ يَضْحَكُونَ
by his crying when the people are laughing,

وَ بِصَمْتِهِ إِذَا النَّاسُ يَخُوضُونَ
by his silence when the people are chatting away,

وَ بِخُشُوعِهِ إِذَا النَّاسُ يَخْتَالُونَ.ـ
and by his humility when the people are boasting.

Tips on memorizing the Qur'an

Notice the young brothers that memorized the Qur'an in your community, they are already pushed to the front of the congregation by virtue of their accomplishment. They, at this early start, are forced to contribute to the community and live a life of significance. Bi idhnillah. That's what we all want. The Qur'an can do it for you.

But these gifts have a condition: the taqwa of Allah. There is one absolute naseeha that will make or break the persons drive to memorize the Qur'an: One must desist from sin! Ibn Mas'ood said, "I feel that indeed someone will forget knowledge they had a acquired because of sins they commit."

When Abu Haneefah, rahimahullah, was confronted with a Fiqh Mas'alah that he was unable to conclude, he would get up and pray two raka'at in tawbah to Allah. These are people who truly knew the prize to be won. Allah ta'ala teaches us in the Qur'an: "[Be conscious of Allah and Allah will teach you.] This knowledge is from Allah ta'ala, a gift. It makes no sense that someone spends their nights disobeying the gift-giver while awaiting His gifts in the morning".

Al-Khateeb reported in al-Jaami' (2/387) that Yahya ibn Yahya said: "A man asked Maalik ibn Anas, 'O Abu 'Abd-Allaah! Is there anything that will improve my memory?' Maalik ibn Anas, rahimahullah, replied, 'If anything will improve it, it is giving up sin." Bishr Alhaafee, rahimahullah, said "A servant commits a sin, and is deprived [thereby] of performing tahajjud."

One of the key: If you want your children to be effective in their Deen and their memorization of Qur'an, YOU have to be the one that you want your children to become. Do not let them see a contradiction.

Ibn `Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "The heart that has no Qur'an in it is like an abandoned ruined dwelling." [At-Tirmidhi]. What kind of home would you like your heart to dwell in? excusitis, is a most powerful sickness that keeps people back from accomplishing in life. Excuse-it is. If you interview effective people, you will rarely find them making excuses. If you want to succeed in your memorization, never make excuses. Do what you have to do. I forbid those around me from making excuses. I advise the same for you. Do what you have to do to accomplish. If you cannot, then do not make excuses.

One of the interesting excuses is "I have to completely understand the Qur'an before I memorize it. I have to know Arabic, and Fiqh and Hadith before I start from the source." Do not look at what a scholar is currently reading or studying. Look at what he did in the beginning. Every single scholar I have ever met started with Qur'an, nothing else. If you want to accumulate massive knowledge of this Deen, you must begin with memorization of the Qur'an. The children in the Hifdh school are well on their way to accomplishing massive accumulation of knowledge of this deen by virtue of their Hifdh. Bi idhnillah.

Let me give you two views by two very different people and how they look at the challenges of life:

Person 1: "Oh man, that's a killer. I can't do that. This time I just give up. Looks like I'm finally whipped. I'll never amount to anything. I'm tired."

Person 2: "Awesome, that was the kind of challenge I've been waiting for. Yaa Rabb, I am going to make you proud of me. I'm going to give it my best. I'm going to pump 110% of my energy into every part of this challenge!"

Guess which one will succeed in their memorization of the Qur'an. That's right, the second one. Why? Because the second one has the right attitude.

When I hear someone talking about their attempts to memorize Qur'an, I can usually tell which category they have locked themselves into. It is not the Qur'an. The Qur'an is easy to remember. Allah ta'ala testifies to that in the Qur'an: [And verily we made the Qur'an easy to remember, so is there anyone who will take heed?] If you think it's easy for you, it is. If you think it is hard for you, it is. It is your attitude that determines it.

Below are some quick tips that will help you in memorizing the Qur'an:

1. You absolutely must have a teacher.

Do NOT try to memorize on your own.You must have a teacher who you respect and whom you fear. Don't ask 'how' to memorize the Qur'an. Ask where you can find the best teacher. The teacher will then guide you on the 'how'.

2. Distractions.

In memorizing the Qur'an, you must free your mind and environment of distractions. Imagine trying to memorize at a football game? Tough, huh? How about a theme park, could you sit down and control yourself to memorize? Probably not. Getting into a Qur'an Hifdh program with a teacher and discipline will assist you in creating the perfect atmosphere for memorization.

3. Revise  through Audio.

A lot of people think they are memorizing the 'look' of the Mushaf(The scripture), but actually you are memorizing the 'sound' of Ayat. Some people record their recitation on CD and listen to it again and again. Do not be afraid to read loud.

4. Location of the Mushaf(The Scripture).

Your eyes follow a specific direction depending on what you are thinking or doing. If you are lying, your eyes go left. If you are remembering something visual, like where you left your keys, your eyes will look upwards.

When you memorize, the direction of memorization is right and left, not downwards. The mistake people make is that they put their mushaf low on the ground and then try to memorize. In order to fully harness the power of your mind, you must keep the mushaf at eye level, and not dip your head..

5. Eat brain food.

We've all heard the advice that you have to eat Badams (almonds) and nutritious food to improve your memory. Well, its absolutely right! The food you eat, the drinks you drink, directly affect your ability to excel in memorization of the Qur'an.

Do not eat fatty, unhealthy food. Do not drink soda. Eat a nutritious light breakfast, a nutritious light lunch, with almonds for snacks during the day. Subhan Allah, you will find you accomplish much more in your day.

6. Make everyday a victory.

You can move a mountain rock by rock. Enjoy every page you memorize, every Ayah.

Often people ask for tips to memorize the Qur'an. They are expecting me to teach them a special 'hifdh-diet' or something else. There is no doubt that there are three ingredients. If you have these three ingredients, you will accomplish what you set out for:

1. Dua, supplication (you must always reflect your desire to Allah).

2. Sabr, patience (it will be a testing path, fill your bags with Sabr powerbars).

3. Taqwa, protecting yourself from sin.

If you do not remember anything from this article except these three ingredients (DST – Dua, Sabr, Taqwa – DST) then, bi idhnillah, it will suffice.`Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet (sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "The one who was devoted to the Qur'an will be told on the Day of Resurrection: `Recite and ascend (in ranks) as you used to recite when you were in the world. Your rank will be at the last Ayah you recite." [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi].

How many ranks will you climb on the Day of Resurrection?

How many ranks would you like to climb?

Value Everyone!

 Value Everyone!

"And lower your wing for the believers (be courteous to the fellow believers)". Qur'an-(15:88)

A Sheikh started off his lecture by holding up a R200 note (two hundred South African rand bill) note. In the Masjid filled with about 500 people, he asked, "Who would like this R200 note?"

Hands started going up…

He said, "I am going to give this R200 note to one of you but first, let me do this." He proceeded to crumple the money up.

He then asked, "Who still wants it?"

Still the hands were up in the air.

"Well," he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his feet.

He picked it up, now all crumpled, slightly worn out and a bit dirty. "Now who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air.

"My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth R200.

Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make, circumstances that come our way and by what others harmfully inflict upon us.

We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Allah has made you special - Don't ever forget it!

Value what Allah has given us, treasure every person and do not look down upon anyone!

Nu`man bin Bashir (May Allah bepleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,

"The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever".He (PBUH) illustrated this by interlacing the fingers of both his hands.

The Cricket- Motivational Story

The Cricket

A man and his friend were in a city, walking through the street. It was during the noon lunch hour and the streets were filled with people. Cars were blowing their horns, taxis were squealing around corners, sirens were wailing, and the sounds of the city were almost deafening. Suddenly, the man said to his friend, "I hear a cricket."

His friend said, "What? You must be crazy. You couldn't possibly hear a cricket in all of this noise!"

"No, I'm sure of it," the man said, "I heard a cricket."

"That's crazy," said the friend.

The man listened carefully for a moment, and then walked across the street to a big cement planter where some shrubs were growing. He looked into the bushes, beneath the branches, and sure enough, he located a small cricket. His friend was utterly amazed. "That's incredible," said his friend. "You must have super-human ears!"

"No," said the man. "My ears are no different from yours. It all depends on what you're listening for."

"But that can't be!" said the friend. "I could never hear a cricket in this noise."

"Yes, it's true," came the reply. "It depends on what is really important to you. Here, let me show you."

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a few coins, and discreetly dropped them on the sidewalk. And then, with the noise of the crowded street still blaring in their ears, they noticed every head within twenty meters turn and look to see if the money that tinkled on the pavement was theirs.

"See what I mean?" asked the man.

"It all depends on what's important to you."

LESSONS:

·        Let's focus our attention and minds on the more important aspects of life!

·        Lets pay closer attention to what our religious scholars and those that and are near and dear to us say.

·        Sometimes we hear but do not listen!

A person who focuses his attention on pleasing Allah and preparing for the life after death will have this world brought to his feet!

For Allah says:"Whosoever desires the reward of the Hereafter, We give him increase in his reward, and whosoever desires the reward of this world , We give him thereof  and he has no portion in the Hereafter"[Quran-al-Shoora 42:20]

Amazing Facts About the Human Body

Amazing Facts About the Human Body

The nasal bones are especially structured so that the air inhaled can go to the lungs only after circulating several times in the nose and thus warming up.

The thighbone can bear a weight weighing a ton when perpendicular.

When an athlete pole-vaults and he lands on the ground, every square centimeter of his pelvis is exposed to a pressure of 1,400 kilograms.

Even for a faint smile, 17 muscles have to work together at the same time.

A liver cell is specialized enough to perform more than 500 operations at a time.

The heart connects the 100 trillions cells in the human body one by one.

The heart beats approximately 100,000 times a day.

The human body has resistance to approximately 600 rads of radiation, whereas the tolerance of scorpions rises as high as 40-150 thousand rads.

A normal human body has about 5 billion capillaries whose total length, if stretched out, is about 950 kilometers.

Special secretion in the nasal mucous retains and sweeps out about 80-90of the micro-organisms that gain entry to the respiratory system directly or through dust.

One B cell can pump out more than 10 million antibody molecules an hour.

Our heart pumps about 43,000 liters of blood per day.

The simplest cells have roughly 2,000 different types of proteins.

If the information in DNA were put in the form of a book, these books put on top of each other would reach 70 meters high.

The DNA of a single cell contains the design of 206 bones, 600 muscles, a network of 10,000 auditory muscles, a network of 2 million optic nerves, 100 billion nerve cells, and 100 trillion cells in the body.

The probability of the amino acid sequence of a protein made up of 500 amino acids being in the correct order is 1 in 10950.

A brain cell is in constant interaction with others numbering up to 10,000. This communication network is far more complex than all the switchboards in the world.

The nucleus of each of the trillions of cells making up the human body includes a data bank big enough to fill a 900-volume encyclopedia.

The human eye works by some 40 different parts functioning together.

The retinal membrane at the back of the eye is made up of 11 different layers.

Each red cell can carry 300 million hemoglobin molecules.

When we inhale, oxygen floods into about 300 million tiny chambers in our lungs.

If water were only slightly more viscous, it would be impossible for blood to be transported through the body's capillary system.

Water makes up about 70 percent of the human body.

Immune system elements that the baby needs, such as antibodies or defense cells, are given to the baby ready-made in the mother's milk.

There is 5 liters of blood in the body of a human weighing 60 kilograms.

Due to their incredible flexibility, red cells, with a diameter of about 7.5 micrometers, can squeeze through capillaries which are normally four to five micrometers in diameter.

A single brain can process work equivalent to that of 4.5 million transistors on a modern microprocessor.

The human kidneys filter about 140 liters of blood every day through one million small filtering units.

The lifespan of a red blood cell is about 120 days.

Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny? - [Quran 55:13]

Best Deeds

Best Deeds

It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah bin Mas'ood (may Allah be pleased with him), who observed:
"I asked Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) which deed was the best." He (the Holy Prophet) replied: 'The Prayer at its appointed hour.' I (again) asked: "Then what?" He (the Holy Prophet) replied: 'Kindness to the parents.' I (again) asked: "Then what?" He replied: 'Earnest struggle (Jihad) in the cause of Allah.' I refrained from asking any more questions for fear of annoying him. (Sahih Muslim: 120)

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) was asked about the best of deeds. He observed: "Belief in Allah." He (the inquirer) asked: 'What next?' He (the Holy Prophet) replied: "Jihad (struggle to the utmost) in the cause of Allah." He (the inquirer) again asked: 'What next?' He (the Holy Prophet) replied: "Pilgrimage accepted into the grace of the Lord." (Sahih Muslim: 118)

Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that I asked the Messenger of Allah: "Which of the deeds is the best?" He (the Holy Prophet) replied: 'Belief in Allah and Jihad in His cause.' I again asked: "Who is the slave whose emancipation is the best?" He (the Holy Prophet) replied: 'One who is valuable for his master and whose price is high.' I asked: "What if I cannot afford to do it?" He (the Holy Prophet) replied: 'Help an artisan or make anything for the unskilled (laborer).' I (Abu Dharr) said: "O Messenger of Allah, you see that I am helpless in doing some of these deeds." He (the Holy Prophet) replied: 'Desist from doing mischief to the people. That is your own charity for your self.'
(Sahih Muslim: 119)

Love of Allah is the basis of worship that should be directed to Him alone. Any other love should be for His sake too. The real love of Allah is to do whatever He ordained and to abandon whatever He forbade, in addition to following the Prophet's Sunnah.

Whoever obeys someone or something other than Allah and His Messenger, or follows any saying other than theirs, or fears other than Allah or seeks the pleasure of other than Allah, or puts his trust in other than Him, does not love Allah, nor does he love His Messenger. Muslims should also love one another and wish the best for one another. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said:

"One will not be a true believer unless he loves for his brother what he loves for himself." (Bukhari, Muslim, Nasa'i, Ahmed and Ibn Majah)

Imam Malik and Imam Ahmed narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Allah said: My love is due to those who love one another for My sake."

MID-DAY NAP

MID-DAY NAP
Known as Qailulah in Islam

A short mid-day nap (Qailulah) is a Sunnah.  The value of this mid-day nap in total body relaxation has been appreciated recently by scientists.

Not only does a mid-day nap give relaxation to the body in day time but it is also very conducive to sleep at right.

Relaxing once during the day is very conducive to total relaxation and sleep.

It should be appreciated that insomnia is a "powerful stressor in itself".   The Sunnah of short mid-day nap may, therefore, be practiced as a remedy for sleeplessness.

Furthermore, the sunnah is not necessarily to sleep during the day but to lie down for some time to relax.  This is exactly what is required for proper relaxation according to the modem scientific investigations.

So Why Nap?
-Reduce stress! Siesta-loving persons are more relaxed. They usually score better on stress tests than others who don't take a shortnap during the day.
-The risk of heart disease is shown to be greatly reduced by regular 30 minute naps.
-Naps greatly strengthen the ability to pay close attention to details and to make critical decisions.
-Naps taken about eight hours after you wake have been proved to do much more for you than if you added those twenty minutes onto already adequate nocturnal sleep.

Timing Is Everything!
A nap should be about 15 to 30 minutes in duration. If you nap longer than thirty minutes, your body falls into deep sleep, which is difficult to wake from and when you do, you'll feel groggy

If you are severely sleep-deprived and must nap longer than 30 minutes, then you shouldn't sleep less than an hour and a half, which is a complete sleep cycle. WARNING: Don't expect to be fully alert until at least an hour after that nap.
A 15 minute nap is enough time to turn the nervous system off and can recharge the whole system!
If you are going to nap in the middle of the day, BE CONSISTENT and make a habit of napping everyday. An irregular napping schedule might disrupt your internal body clock. Napping only on weekends is like dieting or exercising only on weekends to make up for a week of overeating.
Brief naps taken daily are healthier than sleeping in or taking very long naps on the weekend. Be careful about taking that long nap on a lazy Sunday afternoon- you may find it hard to get to sleep that night and getting up on Monday to start the new week.
Late afternoon napping isn't healthy- it delays your falling asleep time in the evening and begins to shift your biological clock.

Is There An Inborn Tendency To Nap?
Research indicates that the human body is inclined to rest in the middle of the afternoon as well as at night, even after adequate nocturnal sleep. A heavy lunch does not make you sleepy, it simply unmasks the physiological sleepiness that's already in your body. The "post-lunch dip" in alertness occurs whether or not food is consumed. Our natural sleep pattern is biphasic: We have a significant drop in body core temperature and alertness at night, and a similar but smaller drop in the middle of the day. It's then that you need a nap the most, especially if you have slept poorly the night before.

SLEEP POSTURE

The posture one adopts while sleeping reveals a lot about the personality of the person, his attitude towards life and so on.

Lying down in bed relaxes the muscles of the body and the degree of relaxation is determined by the sleep posture adopted by the person.

In the semifoetal position the person lies on his side with arms and legs partially folded.  The limbs are not kept in an exactly opposed position.

In terms of physical comfort, in this position it is possible to turn from side to side without undoing the set configuration of the body position.  It is supposed to be the best position in terms of physical comfort.  It has, therefore, been considered as the best position for relaxation.

According to an old proverb the kings are known to prefer to sleep on their back, the rich man on his stomach and th ewise man on his side.

These abovementioned observations bear testimony to the superiority of sleeping in semi-flexed position on one side.

The sleep position which was adopted by Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) is a Sunnah and is scrupulously adopted by devout Muslims.  He used to lie on his right-side with limbs slightly flexed, right hand below his cheek and facing towrds Kaba Sharif.  This position is similar to the semi-foetal position described above, and, obviously in the light of the existing knowledge about sleep posture, is the position adopted by a highly balanced person psychologically.  It is also the best posture for relaxation, both physical and psychological.  Adherence to this sleep posture should therefore, contribute a lot to total body relaxation.

Islam is a complete religion- A way of life- No wise person would live without it….The sunnah of Muhammad [Peace be upon him] is a complete guidance to life!!!!

Fast of Aashura

Fast of Aashura

The Messenger of Allah Muhammad [Peace be upon him] has exhorted and encouraged his Ummah to fast on the day of Ashura. He said:

"This fast[Aahura] is a compensation for the (minor) sins of the past year."(Hadith-Muslim)

Note: Fast either on the 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th Muharram. According to The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu-Alayhi-Wasallam) : "Observe the fast of Ashura and oppose the Jews.  Fast a day before it or a day after."(Baihaqi)

Spending on Your Family

The Messenger of Allah Muhammad [Peace be upon him] is reported to have said:

"One who generously spends on his family on the day of Aashora, Allah will increase (his provision) for the whole year." (Hdith-Baihaqi)
